Summary of the HafenCity East System View
HafenCity East Sustainable District Heating System
Hamburg’s HafenCity is currently the largest inner-city development project in Europe. A former harbour industrial area of 157 ha is being rebuilt step by step as a vibrant city area. enercity Contracting Nord GmbH (eCG Nord) is holding the concession for the construction and operation of the heating network of “HafenCity East”. Its sustainable concept is based on a local district heating network fed by various heat-producing units, which will be installed step by step while the demand is increasing. In 2028, the used capacity will be 35 MWth and the yearly heat production rate will reach more than 65 GWh p.a..The completed system will consist of a combined heat and power plant, based on biomethane and natural gas as fuel, a wood fired biomass heating plant and a heat pump. More than 90% of the heating demand will be produced on renewable energy sources. Because of its decentralized structure, the system will grow with the new quarters being built over the prospective period of time. The project investment will total to some 20 million Euros. The primary use of renewable energy and a high efficient cogeneration will allow an extremely low primary energy factor of zero and the specific CO2-emissions will be 31 g/kWh. The energy concept for “HafenCity East” is continuously examined to achieve the best efficient and sustainable solution. Currently the utilisation of industrial waste heat is examined.
